Public Grounds

The Public Grounds Department is responsible for the maintenance on streets and right of ways. This includes repairs of streets as needed and the annual hot mix programs. Other responsibilities include mowing, weed eating, brush chipping, ditches, and taking care of signs. The City of Houston Public Grounds Department can be reached at City Hall at 417-967-3348 for non-emergencies during regular business hours.

The City now has a leaf vacuum that will remove leaves and other light yard waste turning it into compost that will be available to residents. City crews will be around the City based on the route map below. On Tuesdays, the crews will remove yard waste that has been moved to the area along the street on your property as shown in the photos and video below. City crews will only remove debris that is within five (5) feet of the roadway. Any items further away will be left until they are within reach of the vacuum from the roadway. There is no need to call City Hall as the schedule will be followed and no special pick ups will be made. The yard waste will be turned into compost and will be available while supplies last at the City Public Grounds yard located east of the city on Highway 17. The City now will be continuing the wood chipping program that was begun in the past that will remove limbs that have been removed from trees and bushes on resident property. The chippings will be available to any resident who wishes to come pick up a load. City crews will be around the City based on the route map below. On Thursdays, the crews will remove limbs that have been moved to the area along the street on your property as shown in the photos below. Each pick up will be limited to ten (10) six (6) foot long limbs that are less than 2” in diameter. Nothing larger than 2” in diameter will be removed by City crews. City crews will only remove debris that is within five (5) feet of the roadway, with the cut end towards the roadway and not stacked higher than three (3) high. Any items further away or not meeting the criteria will be left until they are within reach of the roadway and properly stacked. There is no need to call City Hall as the schedule will be followed and no special pickups will be made. The limbs will be turned into mulch and will be available while supplies last at the City Public Grounds yard located east of the city on Highway 17. Example of Non-Acceptable Pickup Piles: Thrown together piles that are not uniformly stacked and untangled and do not have the cut ends facing the same direction will not be chipped. (see image below)

Example of Acceptable Pickup Piles: Piles with cut ends facing the same direction and following the other guidelines on acceptable brush piles will be chipped. (see image below)
